Defining an automobile with human-esque descriptors can sometimes seem a bit contrived. Musing over the best word to effectively articulate this 1955 Jaguar XK140 DHC however repeatedly leads to ‘pretty.’
Presented in the original shade of ‘Pearl Grey’ there is a mystical blue hint to the body. It has to be one of the best colours for an XK. Coupled with the darker blue mohair hood (in excellent condition and complete with matching cover) and royal blue interior hide and carpets with contrasting deep grained burr walnut wooden dash and door tops, this is a gorgeous looking motorcar.
‘RVR 500’ is an original UK home-market motorcar and therefore unlike so many XK’s has always been right-hand drive. Along with scarcity, further adding to its appeal the car has been sensibly upgraded with electronic ignition, front disc brakes, spotlights, high-torque starter motor and an expansion tank to aid efficient cooling. Indeed within the extensive history file there are a raft of reassuring invoices over many years from notable marque specialists, which include; Twyford Moors and Guy Broad to name a couple.
Most recently in 2023 Guy Broad was commissioned to perform an extensive service which included a rear brake overhaul and new brake servo, new HT leads, coil and rocker cover gasket. With the latter having addressed a slight oil weep, the engine bay proudly presents as well as the rest of the car. Adding further reassurance for the new custodian, a gearbox and overdrive rebuild was conducted only 5,000 miles ago too, completing the mechanical requirements tick box.
A heritage certificate is enclosed in the file, including an older ‘vehicle information sheet’ supplied by Jaguar themselves in March 1987. The new custodian will also no doubt be interested and pleased to see photographs in the history file which include the car whilst undergoing a full nut and bolt restoration, and more latterly in 2007 performing chauffeuring duties to Prince Michael of Kent.
On the road, RVR 500 pulls like a healthy 3.4 litre inline-six Jaguar unit should, with a tractable and willing surge on burying the throttle, accompanied by a sensational noise. All gears are easy to select, including overdrive, and the brakes are effective and even in their effort. The car has toured extensively in the past both in Europe and Australia and it remains very capable of doing so now. Inertia reel seatbelts which are fitted further enhance the overall suitability for doing so. Enquiries and any inspection are welcomed.
