Chassis No: GTK 58

This regal Black over Triumph Blue Crosbie and Dunn bodied 20/25 was one of the last 20/25 models to depart from the production line (as a rolling chassis) in October 1936. As a consequence, it features some of the developments that only usually featured on its successor – the 25/30, such as an upgraded steering box.

The car was completed by the Smethwick based coachbuilders in February 1937. It is a rare example being only one of four limousine bodies to be built by Crosbie and Dunn on the 20/25 chassis, with only one other known survivor today.

As is often the case with pre-war Rolls Royce’s, the car resided in the United States of America (specifically California) for a forty-year period, having been repatriated to the United Kingdom in the 1980’s.  A n interesting history file shows that the colour scheme whilst in the US was an acquired(!) contrasting shade of cream and red. Fortunately, since then the car has been returned to the discerning combination that presents today – the lower half having received fresh paint in very recent history (2023) too.

After a period wearing the number plate ‘RSU 338’ the most recent custodian spent some considerable time researching the car and ultimately managed to have the original number ‘COX 84’ reinstated. Consequently, the original chassis card is accompanied by various elements of period literature and information chronicling the cars whereabouts and ownership.

The cars commendable external appearance extends to the opulent interior whereby all of the woodwork has recently been lovingly French polished and the rear passenger compartment superbly trimmed by the well regarded Tom Hampton in grey West of England cloth, with appropriate light blue carpet. The folding occasion seats are of course present and correct.

The car runs and drives without fault. Discrete indicators have been added as a modern day upgrade, along with conversion to 12volt. The cylinder head has been replaced during recommissioning works since 2022 and the engine has impeccable manners; starting without fuss, idling sweetly and quietly, pulling well on the road and not getting hot in the slightest. It is a delight to drive and ready for work or otherwise without impending expenditure.
